In a major breakthrough, the Assam Police on Tuesday night arrested the main accused in the lynching of two men in Karbi Anglong on 8 June.
The culprit identified as Alphajoz Timung was arrested from Bheloghat Beygaon under Dokmoka Police Station in Karbi Anglong.
On 8 June, two friends Nilotpal Das (29), a sound engineer, and Abhijeet Nath (30), a businessman were on their way to a waterfall at Kangthilangso in the district. They were stopped at around 7:30 pm by the local villagers of Panjuri Kacharigaon under Dokmoka Police Station. They were accused of being child lifters, dragged out of their vehicle and brutally beaten to death by the locals. The police said, it was Alphajoz Timung who had informed the villagers that these two “boys (were) buying lots of chocolates” and there was “an abducted child” inside the car, Time8 reported.
The Assam Police have so far arrested more than 30 people in connection with the incident.
Following the incident Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on 9 June held a high-level meeting and directed Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia to maintain law and order and to bring the accused to justice.
