Kerala: 3 people died, 8 people feared trapped in a landslide due to heavy rainfall

At least 3 people were killed and 8 people were feared trapped in a landslide in Kattipara area, Kozhikode District of Karela.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed Chief Secretary and District Collectors to provide immediate relief to the affected people, ANI reported.

Heavy rain and landslides have almost fully consumed the Kozhikode district with extensive damage to lives and properties. Four houses got washed away in the landslides. Search and rescue operation are underway.

Presently, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Management (SDM) teams are jointly working in Kozhikode for damage-control.

Earlier on Saturday, a strong wind has led to falling of trees and electric poles at several locations causing traffic issues and blockade of roads. The rain also caused major damage to crops and property in Idukki, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts.

On 11 June, the death toll in rain-related incidents in Kerala had risen to 13 after heavy rains claimed four more lives. Several parts of the state have been witnessing heavy rainfall since the onset of monsoon, India reported.
