A delegation of journalists from Tripura representing the “Forum for Protection of Journalists” on Monday called on Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Dr Jitendra Singh over recent attacks on State’s journalists.
The delegation called for a high-level inquiry against the recent daylight killing of journalist Sudip Datta Bhowmik and the killing of another young television journalist Santanu Bhowmik two months earlier.
The journalists’ body also alleged continuous violence and oppression on State’s journalist community.
Tripura government on 22 November constituted a Special Investigative Team (SIT) to probe the killing of journalist Sudip Dutta Bhowmik, who was shot dead by a state paramilitary jawan near capital Agartala.
Bhaumik is the second journalist killed in the State in a span of two months. In September, journalist Shantanu Bhowmick was killed allegedly by some workers of a political party.
