The Assam Police have arrested 16 persons in connection with the lynching of two Guwahati-based youths in Karbi Anglong district on Friday night.
The arrested persons have been charged under Section 302 and Section 34 of IPC.
“So far, we have arrested 16 persons, 15 of them are directly involved in the attack, while one has been arrested for posting objectionable content on social media inciting communal violence, soon after the incident took place. We are treading meticulously in this case, and investigation is on. There’s no substance to the rumour of ‘Sopadhora’ (child lifters) in the area that comprises 4-5 villages. But it had created a fear psychosis among people here,” Additional Director General of Police, Mukesh Agarwal, told the media.
On Friday night, victims Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath were brutally killed by a mob in Karbi Anglong on suspicion of being child lifters. The incident has been widely condemned. Thousands of people took protest marches in Guwahati on Sunday.
Following the incident Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal held a high-level meeting and directed Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia to maintain law and order and to bring the accused to justice.
