Gaza protests: UN chief urges restraint to avoid further loss of life

As the Gaza violence left over 50 Palestinians dead and thousands injured, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to show restraint to avoid further loss of life.

“I am profoundly alarmed and concerned by the sharp escalation of violence and the number of Palestinians killed and injured in the Gaza protests. It is imperative that everyone shows the utmost restraint to avoid further loss of life,” said Mr Guterres in a tweet on Tuesday.

Over 55 Palestinians have been killed and thousands wounded by Israeli troops on Israel’s border with Gaza on Monday. This was the deadliest day of violence since the 2014 Gaza war.

The protests ensued as the United States opened its embassy in Jerusalem, which outraged the Palestinians.

As tensions remain high, more protests are expected in the coming days.
