Kolkata: Merchant vessel catches fire in Bay of Bengal, 11 crew members rescued

A merchant ship “SSL KOLKATA” an Indian flag container vessel, caught fire in the Bay of Bengal off the coast in the wee hours of Thursday.

So far, 11 members out of 22 were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard which launched a massive fire-fighting and rescue operation. But the fire is yet to be brought under control due to the rough sea wind.

However, it is still unknown as to what caused the fire on the merchant vessel.

Rescue operation for remaining crew is underway.

Earlier this year, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) had evacuated 26 crew members of an oil tanker after a major fire broke out on it, off the coast of Kandla in Gujarat, Zee News reported.
