Sri Lankan Police seeks public support to arrest navy officer in an enforced disappearance case

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Sri Lanka Police is seeking public support to find former Navy Lieutenant Commander Prasad Chandana Hettiarachchi, who is a suspect of the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths in Colombo in 2008-2009, Colombo Page reported

Fort Magistrate earlier this year issued a red notice to arrest the suspect, who is currently absconding.

The CID last week informed the Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that the investigations are being conducted to arrest the suspect.

The CID believes that he is in Sri Lanka and is being harboured by certain parties. The CID has reported having issued warnings about taking legal action against anyone found to harbour the fugitive.

The former Navy Lieutenant Commander is married and a resident of to Wellampitiya Police Division.

Former Naval Media Spokesperson Commodore DKP Dassanayake and five others including three naval officers were arrested on 12 July 2017 in connection with the abduction of 11 youths including six international school students and five university students in 2008 and 2009. After their arrest, the suspects were remanded. They were granted bail on 9th January this year and released pending the case.
