The Western allies of the US, UK and France have launched attacks allegedly on the chemical weapons sites of around capital, Damascus, as well as two locations near the city of Homs of Syria.
US President Donald Trump had initially tweeted about the impending attacks warning Russia. After President Trump retracted, the latest attack appears to have taken Russia and Asad Regime by surprise.
Russia’s ambassador to the US responded by saying the attack on its ally “will not be left without consequences”.
The international media described the wave of strikes as the most significant attack against President Bashar al-Assad’s government by western powers in seven years of Syria’s civil war.
The UN Secretary-General Mr Antonio Guterres in a meeting of the UN Security Council stated, “The Cold War is back with a vengeance, but with a difference”. He also highlighted dangerous circumstances encompassing the wider Middle East region, which he said is facing “a true Gordian knot – different fault lines crossing each other and creating a highly volatile situation with risks of escalation, fragmentation and division.”
