India’s controversial head of Tablighi Jamaat India Maulana Saad Kandhalvi is in Dhaka reportedly to participate in the 53rd Biswa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of the Muslim community after the holy hajj, beginning tomorrow. Maulana Saad Kandhalvi is known for making controversial comments and in December 2016, Darul Uloom Deoband issued a fatwa against him.
The Daily Star reported that Joint Member Secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan Unit of Hefajat Fazlul Karim Kashemi today issued the ultimatum that there will be violence if Maulana Saad Kandhalvi is not sent back to India today evening. Fazlul Karim Kashemi was briefing the journalists after a meeting with a fraction of Hefajat members in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka this afternoon.
A faction of the Tabligh Jamaat yesterday blocked the busy Airport Road protesting the arrival of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi to attend Biswa Ijtema. These followers of the Tabligh Jamaat who also belong to radical Hefajat-e Islam sat on the road and chanted slogans against Maulana Saad Kandhalvi.
Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal stated that Maulana Saad Kandhalvi will not attend the Ijtema but stay in Dhaka.
